Blogs are dead – long live the vlog

Blogs are dead – long live the vlog

(Before I do anything else, I’m going to start with a disclaimer to say that I do realise the irony of writing a text-based blog post telling you that vlogs are better. I can only apologise.)

These days, pretty much any company worth their salt has some kind of blog. They’re easy to set up – if you’re savvy, you can even do it for free – easy to update and a straightforward way to talk directly to existing and potential customers. So why should you replace your text-based entries with video ones?

    No more SEO nightmares

If you run or write a blog, then (unless you’re really missing the point) you probably want people to read it. And the best way to do that is to get yourself up the top of the search rankings in whatever field it is you’re writing in. That means knowing about things like keywords and meta tagging – all those techy things that us writers generally hope someone else will deal with. Video immediately gets you further up the rankings. If you’d like some numbers, video content’s up to 50 times more likely to get you organic page ranks in Google than plain text results. I don’t know what organic page ranks are but I’m told they’re good.

You don’t need to be any good at writing

Unfortunately, if you’re more Baldrick than Baudelaire when it comes to putting pen to paper, you’re probably going to struggle with coming up with regular entertaining blog posts. Assuming you’re happy to appear on camera, or you know someone else who is, then vlogging could well be the best option. As long as you’re chatting about an interesting subject, then it’s pretty easy to create an entertaining video. Your tone of voice, facial expressions, and so on can make it easier for people to follow what it is you’re saying. And you don’t need any expensive equipment to make them (have a look at our blog post on making your first video if you need any more convincing).
